Aim

This one day training day is for organisation working with or on behalf of children and young people, who need to be vigilant in their recruitment and selection of staff.

Safe environments do not happen by accident.  They are purposefully built and carefully maintained.  Safe recruitment and selection processes are essential if schools and care establishments are to attract best staff and deter and reject those who may pose a risk to children or who are unsuited to work with them.

The course is designed to support the the DfES guidance "Safeguarding Children an Safer Recruitment in Education" and includes the new "Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2008".

The training will help schools demonstrate that they have effective recruitment and selection processes in place that ensure learners are both well-taught and protected, which Ofsted will review through a self-evaluation form.

Why has this training come about?

The report of the independent Bichard Inquiry that was carried out following the Soham murder case made a number of recommendations for action by the Home Office, the police, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (formerly DfES) and other agencies. Recommendation 16 of the report was that headteachers and school governors should receive training on how to ensure that interviews to appoint staff reflect the importance of safeguarding children.
